What became of the 2A&SH as John
transferred to Africa?
They saw out most of 1917 in the Somme area before
being transferred to Passchendale in
October of that year.
By July 1918 the
Argylls had
American troops fighting alongside them in that Sector.
In
late August 1918 the Argylls were
moved back to the Somme and by the end of October they had advanced after the
retreating Germans and were now back at Le Cateau, the scene of their first WW1 battle 4
years before.
On Nov 11th the Argylls were
just south of Valenciennes when
the Armistice was declared.
The diary stated “Lecture in demobilisation and
reconstruction was given by an officer from Div HQ on 13th Nov
as a result of the signing of the armistice on 10th
Nov”.
On Dec 1st 1918 200 men were shipped home for
demobilisation.
One of the last entries in the 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders War
Diary was May 14th 1919 with “Orders received to proceed to
UK to Gujerat
Barracks Colchester”.
And so the Argylls were going home.
